The Appeal Court had earlier this month issued notice and an interim order against Mahinda Rajapaksa and his Government, preventing them from acting as Prime Minister, Cabinet and Deputy Ministers. The order was issued in a Quo Warranto case filed by 122 Parliamentarians against Rajapaksa and his new Government. The Supreme Court today decided that a Court of Appeal order issued against the appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister and against his cabinet from holding office, will stand. The Supreme Court also decided that the case will be heard further next month. The United National Front (UNF) said that the order means Rajapaksa cannot be Prime Minister and so the former cabinet must be reinstated. An appeal was later filed in the Supreme Court against the court order issued on Mahinda Rajapaksa and his cabinet. However today the Supreme Court refused to stay the stay order and instead granted leave to proceed with the case next month. The case will be heard on January 16, 17 and 18. (Colombo Gazette) UNF Parliamentarian Ajith Perera said that the President must now appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister.
